Criterion Due May 21st @ 4pm

Criterion grades in Powerschool are subject to teacher review and a thorough examination for plagiarism, and are therefore subject to change.

Criterion is a writing support being implemented in American Literature this semester. Criterion provides students with timely feedback and the opportunity to revise their work. Essays are scored according to writing expectations/standards for grade 10 students and receive a 1-6 score based on the SAT scoring rubric. When a student completes an essay, he/she submits the essay through the website and receives almost immediate feedback and a score. Students are also provided a detailed report of reasons for deductions/score. They can click on each category and see their 'errors' highlighted throughout their essay. Students then have the opportunity to revise their work and improve their score and their writing skills!
All this was explained when students registered during class. They also received a set of directions as well as a sample writing plan with a few hints about the essay. Students may write directly into Criterion or transfer their work from a Word document but formatting is important! This has been discussed in class but furhter information is provided at the Criterion website.

*Once work has been submitted, it moves into the PORTFOLIO section and can be revised from the portfolio/report section.
If you have not registered...
Go to Criterion.ets.org then click on the Student Website option. Choose register then enter the Access Code and Password for your class. (Email me if you need this information.) The registration screen will appear. Create a user name and password that you will remember and that is school appropriate. You do not need to provide an email address to use Criterion. It is optional. Once registered click on the assignments available then make a plan and begin to write.

Am. Lit. Ind. Novel Test

Novels for Q4 were distributed before Easter break. The Q4 independent novel test is Thursday, May 15th or 18th depending on class meeting schedule. Art work is also due this day and graded discussion will follow on the next day of class.

P.3 = To Kill a Mockingbird
P.4 = Fahrenheit 451
P.7 = The Things They Carried
P.8 = Slaughterhouse Five

***Due to an increasing number of students choosing to plagiarize their essays and responses, we will be assessing independent novels differently for the remainder of the year.

Student grades for independent novel study will be based on 3 elements.
1. Students will take a test on each novel consisting of both objective and essay questions.

2. Students will participate in a class discussion (Socratic seminar style wherein each student must participate and will receive a grade based on their input/performance.) A list of discussion topics will be provided.

3. Students will complete and submit a 'creative' project relating to the novel from a list of options provided.

Novels should be completely read and returned on May 10th. Novels not returned the day of the test or lost novels will result in a loss of points and if needed, an invoice for replacement costs.

Journalism

Attention journalism students... after classes begin, we will need to arrange your "work/lab" time to fulfill your obligation for this half credit class.

Please plan to attend either the after-school sessions or schedule an alternative work session. A failure to adhere to the time commitment will affect journalism grades.

Also, when the school year begins, we will discuss fundraising to support the continued professional publishing of the Clarion as well as exciting new online opportunities! Thanks!!!
