Walk-off win for OLSH

The OLSH baseball team mobs teammate Santino Platt after driving in the winning run in the bottom of the 9th.

ROBINSON TWP. -- A game that featured plenty of drama and strange twists deserved a dramatic and twisted ending.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth of a WPIAL quarterfinal, OLSH freshman Santino Platt hit a short chopper toward third base. As Brandon Duerr motored home, Serra third baseman Zach Potts threw to first. The throw was off line, pulling first baseman Wayne Hydak off the bag, and the Chargers dethroned the three-time WPIAL Class A champs, 6-5.

The Chargers will play Neshannock in the quarterfinals at a site and time to be determined.

The game had a little bit of everything. Clutch hits, gritty pitching and an array of disputed calls by the umpires.

"I'd have to say no, I really haven't," said OLSH starting pitcher Preston Falascino when asked if he'd ever been in a stranger game. "But we knew there were going to be calls that were going to be iffy. It happens. It's high school baseball. You just know you have to overcome it and make the play after it."

The two plays that turned the game bordered on unbelievable.

In the bottom of the fifth, with OLSH trailing 4-2, Noah Shahen led off with a double. With two outs and Shahen on third, Falascino hit a ball to Potts at third, and the low throw was clearly dropped by first baseman Hydak as Shahen came around to score. But the first base umpire ruled Falascino out, which ended the inning and negated the run.

After a discussion with the home plate umpire, Falascino was (correctly) ruled safe, counting the run and extending the inning. Brandon Deurr took advantage by producing an RBI double, and Tim Mulvey followed with an RBI single to give OLSH the lead, 5-4. Serra tied the score in the top of the sixth on an equally bizarre sequence.

Serra had two on and one out when a routine grounder was hit to Platt at short. Platt threw to Jason Lanoy at third for what appeared to be an easy force out, but the umpire ruled that Lanoy was not on the bag. That runner, Dylan Kugler, eventually scored when a Falascino pitch got away from catcher Duerr.

OLSH, with only one senior on the roster, kept its composure. Falascino pitched through the eighth inning, gutting it out through 140 pitches. Coach Phil McCarren started to come to the mound before the top of the eighth to remove Falascino, but the junior wasn't ready to quit just yet.

"I was up to about 120 pitches, and I guess I didn't have my stuff today," said Falascino. "But I had my fielders to back me up, and I knew if I threw strikes my time would come to get those outs.

"I felt confident when I got on that mound. ... I said, 'Coach, I got it. Relax. I'll take care of it for you.' He said OK and walked away."

With two outs and the potential go-ahead runner on third in the top of the eighth, Falascino struck out Potts. Lanoy worked a scoreless top of the ninth to set up the white-knuckle ending.

McCarren wasn't surprised that his youthful charges could pull out such a win. He could see the character building as OLSH went through the second half of its section schedule. The Chargers faced three of the top teams -- Serra, Bentworth and Chartiers-Houston -- in succession within a week and won them all, two in come-from-behind fashion.

"I talked about signature wins," said McCarron. "Sometimes you need to get signature wins to believe in yourself and go from being a good team to becoming a great team. ... That really helped the kids to believe.

"Sometimes you have to do it to believe it."

After dethroning the team that has ruled Class A for the last three years, OLSH made plenty of believers outside of its own dugout.

WPIAL CLASS A QUARTERFINALS:

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Chargers 6 - Serra Catholic Eagles 5 in 9 Innings
In the WPIAL quarterfinal on Wednesday, May 26, 2012, at Burkett Field in Robinson Township, a young upstart baseball team from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School faced off against perennial powerhouse, Serra Catholic, led by star pitcher Alain Girman while Preston Falascino took the mound for OLSH. Serra broke through in the third inning with three runs on two walks and two OLSH errors. OLSH answered in the home half of the inning with two runs on a Santino Platt single and Tristan Snyder double, followed by a walk and a single by Brandon Duerr. Serra added a run in the fourth inning on a Girman triple. In this seesaw battle, OLSH regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Noah Shahen doubled and scored on a hit by pitcher Falascino. Falascino scored on a double by Brandon Duerr, to tie the score at 4-4. Tim Mulvey’s single drove in Duerr and OLSH had its first lead, 5-4. In the sixth inning, the Eagles tied the game when a single by Kugler, a walk by Coddington, a fielder’s choice and a wild pitch combined to allow Coddington to score. Alain Girman finished the sixth inning and was relieved by Chad Hazaga in the seventh. Preston Falascino pitched through the eighth inning and was relieved by Jason Lanoy in the ninth with the score still knotted at 5-5. The bottom of the ninth started for OLSH with a Falascino single and a walk by Duerr. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Jason Lanoy was walked intentionally, and a fielder’s choice recorded the second out, leaving the bases loaded for Santino Platt, whose infield single scored Duerr with the game winning run. OLSH: 5 runs, 11 hits, 3 errors; Serra: 5 runs, 7 hits, 1 error. Jason Lanoy was the winning pitcher, while Chad Hazaga took the loss for Serra. OLSH advances to the third round of the playoffs and will meet Neshannock, defending WPIAL Class A champion, at a date and location to be named soon.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Chargers 1 - Beth-Center Bulldogs 0

Our Lady of the Sacred Heat High School edged Beth Center by a score of 1-0 in its WPIAL A playoff game at CCAC Boyce Campus on Tuesday, May 15, 2012. Junior pitcher Tim Mulvey pitched six scoreless innings for OLSH. Mulvey gave up two hits and struck out six, while walking no one. Mulvey’s hit in the second inning created OLSH’s only scoring opportunity of the game, with the run coming after a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman Santino Platt. Preston Falascino led the OLSH hitters with a double and two singles. Falascino relieved Mulvey in the 7th inning, facing the final 3 batters to preserve the win. Beth Center was led by senior pitcher Mike Knox, who held OLSH to one run on six hits, while striking out eight and walking two batters. Knox pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the third inning. At the plate, C. J. Novak and Zach Holmes led Beth Center, with one hit each. OLSH advances to the second round of the playoffs where they will face Serra Catholic at Burkett Field in Robinson Township at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2012.

Few teams anywhere could match the week the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart baseball team had last week.
The week started with a 7-6 win over Serra Catholic as the Chargers stopped Alain Girman’s 29-game winning streak.
“Girman had defeated us before and dominated us,” said OLSH coach Phil McCarren. “But the kids weren’t intimidated, they looked on it as a challenge.
The week ended with scoring nine runs after two outs and the bases empty to defeat Chartiers-Houston 10-5 and remain alive in the playoff race. OLSH remains on the outside looking in for the playoff race but the wins over Serra and Chartiers-Houston allow the Chargers a good chance to make the playoffs because of tiebreakers. That chance seemed unlikely early Saturday afternoon.
“There was a lot riding on Saturday’s game and we talked about before and during the game,” McCarren said. “After the first two outs in the seventh and we were down 5-1, I can’t say I was confident but I knew we still had an opportunity.”
Two walks and two singles later, the opportunity was still there until Brandon Duerr, the team’s only senior, got a single to tie the score. Tim Mulvey provided the lead with a two-run double to right center and Chartiers-Houston could not respond in the bottom of the seventh.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart softball is turning heads

Through four regular season games, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart has already surpassed its season win total from a year ago.

The Chargers went through a disappointing 2-13 campaign in 2011.

Under second-year head coach Sam LoFaso OLSH has started the season 3-1 and more importantly 2-0 in Section 1-AA with wins over Bishop Canevin and Brentwood.

In the preseason LoFaso said, “We are very young, however we are very talented with four new freshman starters. We are going to be much better than last year’s team. Our story is clearly ahead of us.”

The five returning starters are senior pitcher/outfielder Brianna Davis, sophomore pitcher/first baseman Emily Duerr, sophomore shortstop/outfielder Natalie Pollock, sophomore second baseman Kayla Skelly and junior third baseman Sophia Worrall.

Duerr was team MVP last year and all-state honorable mention pitcher while batting .444.

Despite very low numbers, OLSH manages to compete in boys volleyball

2012_0413_OLSH_Volley

(Photo: Our Lady of the Sacred Heart senior outside hitter Vinnie Smith digs out a shot at the Derry Tournament, while coach Mike McDonald observes. Tri-State Sports & News Service Photo.)

Mike McDonald is dealing with a first in his 19 years as coach of the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart boys volleyball team.

"It was tough enough that we lost 10 players to graduation," McDonald said. "Then we had four sophomores who decided not to play this year. It was very surprising, because all four of those kids would have been seeing significant playing time on this team."

That leaves McDonald and the Chargers with a significant drop in numbers.

"We have 10 kids for varsity and junior varsity [combined]," he said. "That's the lowest since my first year, when we had eight kids. Since then, I've had no less than 16. It's been a big change for us."

To make matters worse ...

"We have four seniors, including two first-year players, one junior, five sophomores and no freshmen," McDonald said. "It's a real challenge to have such a small squad. We're still trying to have junior varsity matches, but it's not easy. And if you have an injury or illness, it's impossible."

Varsity experience is also lacking.

"Only two of our 10 players have varsity experience," McDonald said.

Despite the lack of numbers, McDonald's squad is off to a respectable start. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart posted victories against Moon Area, 3-0, and Beaver County Christian, 3-1, before dropping a 3-0 decision to Ambridge.

The Chargers lost to Montour, 3-2, on Tuesday.

"We may have a smaller squad, but our goal remains the same," McDonald said. "The standard is the standard. Our goal every year is to qualify for the WPIAL playoffs."

To reach that goal, OLSH must finish among the top four teams in Section 1-AA. After Tuesday's action, Ambridge leads the section with a 4-0 record followed by Montour at 3-1. Hopewell and OLSH are tied for third at 2-2.

The two returning starters are Shaughn McDonald and Greg Ott. It's no surprise that they are the co-captains. McDonald is a 6-foot sophomore outside hitter who was voted to the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Finest 40 in Class AA as a freshman.

"It's rare to see a freshman named to an all-state team in any sport," Mike McDonald said. "Shaughn is passionate about the sport of volleyball. He spends all of his free time playing volleyball and it shows on the court. His ability allows us to be competitive in this section."

Ott is a 6-3 senior middle hitter.

"Greg was voted to the third team of the WPIAL All-Star team last year," McDonald said. "He was a front-row starter last year. This year, he's playing all the way around.

"Having a new setter has been a bit of a challenge for Greg and Shaughn, but they've handled the situation well."

The new setter is Joe McNally, a 5-9 sophomore.

"The ideal situation for a typical sophomore who has talent, like Joe, would be to have him spend a year with the junior varsity team and develop his setting skills," McDonald said..

"Instead, we have to throw Joe to the wolves and tell him that we still plan on making the playoffs. That's a lot of pressure for any sophomore, but he's handling it well."

The other three starters are 5-10 senior outside hitter Vinnie Smith, 6-0 sophomore middle hitter Greg Strong and 6-0 sophomore opposite Alex Ritter.

"All three are making their varsity debuts," McDonald said. "All three have played well at times, but are also going through growing pains."

Nick Mulvay, a 6-0 junior, is first off the bench as a front-line player.

Also on the Chargers roster are 5-9 senior defensive specialists Zander Lyons, 5-10 senior outside hitter Tom Stewart, and 5-9 sophomore back-row specialist Brian Hammel. Lyons and Stewart are first-year players.

Allen Deep is the vice president of sales for a luggage company and enjoys his work, but for about six weeks out of every year it is his "other" job that gives him the most pleasure.

Deep, who lives in the Riverside School District in Beaver County, is one of the directors for the annual Roundball Classic that will be played Saturday at Geneva College's Metheny Fieldhouse in Beaver Falls.

The four-pack of high school all-star games has the best senior players in Western Pennsylvania guided by many of the district's top high school coaches. The games will get underway at 2 p.m. with the girls Class AA team against the Class A squad.

The boys games will be at 6 and 8 p.m. with the Class A all-stars taking on the Class AAAA all-stars in the nightcap. Tickets are $8 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and $6 for students.

This is the 11th year the games will be played at Geneva and the 11th year Deep has been involved in lining up the talent. When asked if he thought the event would blossom into an annual who's who of high school talent, Deep just laughed.

"It's not how big it has become," he said. "It's the quality of the people that I've met. It's a pleasure for me to ask the players to participate in what we do and see how excited they are. There's nothing better."

The Roundball Classic has grown to the point where the top senior players in Western Pennsylvania want to play in one of the games. This year's group is arguably the most talented one Deep has been able to put together.

In the boys Class AAA vs. Class AA game, Highlands High School sharpshooter Micah Mason will be on the Class AAA squad with Beaver Falls' Sheldon Jeter on the other. Mason is a Drake recruit, while Jeter is still weighing his Division I college options.

Other standouts on the Class AA team are Demetrious Cox of Jeannette, Jon Girvin of Northgate and P.J. McLaughlin of Greensburgh Central Catholic. Some notables on the Class AAA team are New Castle's Corey Eggleston, West Allegheny's Dylan Bongiorni, Montour's Dillon Buechel, Keystone Oak's Rocco Contristano and Uniontown's Marcus Thomas.

In the Class A vs. the Class AAAA contest the marquee matchup has 6-10 Devontae Watson from Lincoln Park, who is headed for Temple, going against 6-10 Barnett Harris of Gateway. Also on the Class AAAA team are Butler's Nate Snodgrass, who is headed for the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and Plum's Nolan Cressler, a Cornell recruit.

Wayne Capers of Chartiers Valley, Tyler Scott of Gateway, Lincoln Davis of Central Catholic, and Mt. Lebanon's Luke Hagy and Kamic Anyang are some of the others on the Class AAAA squad.

Joining Watson on the Class A team are Chris Koryak of Vincentian, Andrew Orie of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Brandon Camic of Serra Catholic, Carrington Motley of Sewickley Academy, Ben Mickens of Allderdice and 6-11 Jon LeGrande and Brandt Gribbin of North Catholic.

"We got just about everybody," Deep said. "The only disappointment is Syracuse won't allow Dontez Ford [a football recruit from Sto-Rox] to play."

Deep said that when the Roundball Classic started at Geneva 11 years ago there was something of a problem getting big-name high school coaches to guide the teams. Not any more.

Gateway's Mitch Adams will coach the Class AAAA boys team, Cornell's Bill Sacco the Class A team, Beaver Falls' Doug Biega the Class AA squad and New Castle's Ralph Blundo the Class AAA team.

"They want to be a part of something that's a quality event," Deep said. "Mitch Adams will be doing it for the second straight year and I told him -- we always asked the coaches from the WPIAL champions -- that I would understand if he didn't want to do it again this year. He said coaching in the game last year was a great experience for him and that he still keeps in touch with a few of the guys from that team.

"That's what it's all about."

The coaches for the girls teams will be Oakland Catholic's Shannon Boyle (Class AAAA), Hopewell's Jeff Homziak (Class AAA), Keystone Oaks Nikki Presto (Class AA) and Vincentian's Ron Moncrief (Class A).

"I think the Class A vs. the Class AAAA boys game is really going to be something with all the talent on both of those squads, and the other game will have Micah Mason going against Sheldon Jeter," Deep said. "I think we've got all of the top seniors in the games."

West Xtra: Quigley Classic All-star game hits 46th year

March 29, 2012 6:54 am

Well, the Dapper Dan Roundball Classic is gone, as is the arena, but the Quigley Classic goes on.

The 46th annual Quigley Classic will be played Friday at the Quigley Catholic High School gym in Baden. The girls game is at 6 p.m. followed at 8 by the boys contest.

Those expected to play for the boys home team include Curtis Lewis and Daniel Steffine of Central Valley, Nick Martin of Blackhawk, Connor Yarzebinski of Freedom, Corey Eggleston of New Castle, Brandt Gribbin and Jon LeGrande of North Catholic, Matt Sangermano and Andrew Orie of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Anthony Palombo of Quigley, Jamie LaVette of Rochester, Royce Watson of Beaver Falls and Chris Koryak of Vincentian Academy.

On the away team will be Corey Mackey and Dustin Goins of Cornell, Davion Hall of Aliquippa, Christian Herstine of Beaver, Brandon Luccarelli of Ellwood City, Devontae Watson, B.J. Lipke and Trey Hosack of Lincoln Park, and Jamal Closter, Steve Emch and Joe Peduto of Quaker Valley.

Lincoln Park coach Mark Javens will coach the away team, while Quigley's Greg Cercone will guide the home team.

"We've had pretty good teams the past couple of years and I expect that will be the case again this year," Quigley athletic director Ed Dubis said.

The Quigley Classic also has four games of grade school players starting at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

When the Quigley Classic first began it was a boys only affair with the Beaver County All-Stars going against the City-Catholic All-Stars. Now, most of the players are from the Beaver County area.

"We try to get the best players in the county and invite players on teams that are in our section, so that's where the players from Vincentian and North Catholic come from. They are in the same section as [Quigley]," said Dubis, Quigley athletic director.

He wasn't sure how teams would be designated. In the past the boys and girls games have been North vs. South or Team 1 vs. Team 2.

Players wear their school's uniforms with one team in home (light) jerseys, the other in away (dark).

"We think it's nice to give the players one last chance to wear their school's uniform," Dubis said. "Plus, that makes it easier for the game announcer."

OLSH track team lacks own track but Sangermano and Wolf break school records

The Our Lady of the Sacred Heart track team does not have some of the facilities more common to other teams. The Chargers do not have their own track or pole vault. But they do have talent.

Yesterday, versus the traditionally strong Beaver Area team, soccer/basketball standout Matt Sangermano recorded a school record in the high jump event. Sangermano cleared 5’11”.

Likewise in the 400-meter event, Alyssa Wolf ran for a time of 1:03.4. Again, this is a new school record.

OLSH is off to a slow start in Section 3-AA competition. On Friday versus Freedom Area, OLSH’s boys lost 125-23. The girls lost 113-36. But head coach Bob Berg was excited about his team’s strengths for the coming season.

“We have a girls’ 4x800 relay team – they’re a bunch of underclassmen trying to get back to the WPIAL meet,” Berg said. He noted also that distance specialist/cross country leader Matt Haupt won in yesterday’s 3200-meter event. Haupt ran the race in 10:26.

Overall, it’s early for the Chargers. As OLSH is a team peppered with talent, it will be interesting to see that talent unfold over the course of the season.

The next event on OLSH’s schedule is the Central Valley Invitational, scheduled for April 14 at 9:00AM.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Congratulations- Matt Haupt who ran 10:09 for 6 th place. He broke his own OLSH record by 12 seconds. His 6 th place was a great result ! Ryder Ballou also did well beating his own personal record by 10 seconds. Both Matt and Ryder did this in the 3200 meter run.

Saturday was a good day for OLSH Track & Field at the Central Valley

Invitational! The Girls 4 by 400 Team placed 5th. The team consisted of

Alyssa Wolf, Lexi Wivell, Leyla Turcios, and Becca Liebrick. Their 5th

place finishing time was 4 minutes, 44 seconds, winning them a place on

the awards stand!

For the Boys Team in the 3200 Meter Run, Matt Haupt recorded a time of 10

minutes, 9 seconds winning him 6th place. This finish also helped him

BREAK the standing OLSH school record by 12 SECONDS! It was an AWESOME

RACE! Ryder Ballou also did well as he beat his own personal record by 10

seconds in the 3200 Meter Run.

Chargers Falascino Throws No-Hitter

03/28/2012, 7:59pm (EDT)
By Matt Farago

Preston Falascino tossed a no-hitter for the OLSH Chargers in a 7-0 win Wednesday

CLINTON, Pa. – Ask any pitcher their bucket list of personal goals, and two are sure to be on everyone’s list: Opening day starter and throwing a no-hitter.

Preston Falascino accomplished both on the same day.

The junior tossed a seven inning gem in the OLSH Chargers 7-0 non-section win over Avonworth Wednesday evening at Youthtowne.

Falascino sat down 12 batters, giving up 4 walks, while allowing just five base runners, only one reaching on an error.

“I felt good after my very first pitch; I felt if I could stay consistent I would have a good outing”

The offense backed up their pitcher with 7 runs. Junior Jason Lanoy ripped his first of two doubles on the day and was singled home by junior Tim Mulvey to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead after two.

Falascino helped his own cause when he single and advanced to third on an error that scored Dan Bechek to start a 5-run third inning for the Chargers. Lanoy drove in Falascino and Tristan Snyder; then junior Noah Shahen hit an RBI double to score Bill Mulcahey.

Falascino was quick to spread the credit of the team win.

“Having a 5 run lead after three innings definitely gives you some confidence” He said. “The offense was alive tonight, everyone contributed”

He went on to credit his catcher, senior Brandon Duerr.

“I almost never have to shake him off; he is the best catcher I’ve played with”

Duerr would triple in the 4th and score on a sacrifice fly by Dan Bechek.

Avonworth had four different pitchers take the mound, starter Tyler Noethinger was charged with the loss.

Including a game last week in Florida Falascino has 26 strikeouts in 14 innings of work and has allowed just two hits.

“When a pitcher has that kind of performance you can coach the game from a rocking chair” Head coach Phil McCarren said.

“Those are pretty good numbers, I think his name needs to mentioned among the top players in the WPIAL, but he still can improve he is only a junior; if he applies himself the sky is the limit.”

Even with the high expectations with a junior loaded team McCarren knows it’s about executing.

“We haven’t accomplished anything yet, we haven’t played a section game; our goal is to our win the section and make the playoffs and see what happens from there.”

Easier said than done in a section with Serra Catholic, led by returning flame thrower Alain Girman. Not to mention last year’s WPIAL runner-up Chartiers Houston.

“Serra is the defending PIAA champions for a reason, that program is the gold standard until some proves otherwise. With Preston and this group of guys, who knows what can happen.”
