McDonald, Michael

Assignment due Thurs., May 10th

This assignment is related to the STEROIDS lesson and info that we covered during the last 2 classes. Please choose a documented story, case, study, or event that has to do with steroid use. Your subject can be famous or not. Please give a one-page, one-sided, single-spaced account of how the person got involved with steroids, what effect they had on their career, what impact (physically, emotionally, etc) steroids had on their life, and what long-term side effects they may have encountered during their use. I do not want you to print out an article! You need to write an article about what you have read! If you print out an article as your work, you will receive a zero!

You CAN'T use any info about Taylor Hooten, or Rick Dye from the video.

This assignment will be collected by me at the cafeteria, in the morning, before homeroom, on Thursday, May 10th.

The assignment will be worth 15 points. If you turn it in a day late, it will be worth 9 points. After that, I won't accept the assignment. DO NOT LEAVE IT IN MY MAIL BOX! IT MUST BE HANDED TO ME PERSONALLY!

Please make sure you include your name and class period on the paper.

Attached is the study guide for the steroids lesson we went over in class.

quiz after EASTER

The quiz will be on Tuesday when we get back from Easter Break! (SORRY!) This quiz will be a review quiz on the HEIMLICH maneuver for the adult, the blocked airway method for an infant (backblows and chest compressions), and the 8 steps for CPR (IN ORDER). Please review the previous blog entry as well as your corrected quizzes that you already have in your possession.

Make sure you review the 3 column study guide that lists the differences between adult, child, and infant cpr. Know the depth of compressions for each category, the size of breaths, and number of hands.

heimlich manuever plus cpr review

We will have the following topics on this quiz:
THE 8 STEPS OF CPR (ALL 3 CATEGORIES-ADULT, CHILD, AND INFANT)
DEPTH OF COMPRESSIONS (THE 3 RANGES IN INCHES): 1/2 TO 1, 1 TO 1AND1/2, AND 1AND1/2 TO 2
THE SIZES OF BREATHS FOR EACH CATEGORY(ADULT, CHILD, AND INFANT)
BLOCKED AIRWAY FOR AN INFANT (BACKBLOWS AND CHEST COMPRESSIONS)

HEIMLICH MANUEVER: THE TECHNIQUE USED TO UNBLOCK AN AIRWAY FOR AN ADULT OR CHILD THAT IS CHOKING.
(Don't forget that the international sign for choking is both hands grasping the front of the neck-like you're choking yourself)
Steps for performing the heimlich is as follows:

1. stand behind the victim
2. wrap your arms around the victim, making a fist with one hand and placing it on the victim's stomach (ABOVE THE BELLY BUTTON AND BELOW THE RIB CAGE).
3. take the other hand and place it on the fist and then pull with force inward and upward multiple times if needed.

THE FORCE OF THE AIR INSIDE THE VICTIM WILL HOPEFULLY PUSH OUT THE FOREIGN OBJECT LIKE A CORK ON A CHAMPAGNE BOTTLE!

infant cpr and blocked airway on 3/8

The quiz for this class will be on the following:
Please review infant cpr (the 8 steps-in order), please review what you do for a blocked airway: (pick up the baby in the BRACE, sit down in a chair, hald the baby face down in a downward slant so GRAVITY is working for you, give the baby 5 BACK BLOWS with the heel of your hand between the shoulder blades, BRACE the baby again, return to the table, hold the top of the baby's head (LIKE A GRAPEFRUIT), and using the FINGERPRINTS of your first 2 fingers, give 5 small chest compressions. Try to give 2 SMALL PUFFS of air, if they still don't go in, you must repeat the process until the airway is clear.

The ratio of compressions to breaths for a baby/infant is: 10 sets of 5 compressions followed by one small puff of air

A BLOCKED AIRWAY is when a foreign object COMPLETELY blocks the airway, not allowing anything BREATHING or SOUND to happen.

2 signs that a baby may not be breathing are: The baby may be BLUEISH OR GREYISH in face and skin color
The baby will not be making anything breathing noises

Everything is done in a smaller, less forceful way with a baby due to the SIZE of the baby.

Infant cpr quiz on 2/29

The quiz for this week will be mostly on infant cpr info. The eight steps for INFANT CPR will be required. Along with some of the additional info from both of the Infant cpr sheets from the last blog entry. The following concepts will be included:
1. size of the breaths for an infant
2. weight of an infant's head in relation to the rest of it's body
3. your mouth over the infant's mouth and nose
4. use the fingerprints of your 2 fingers to do compressions
5. hold the infant's head "like a grapefruit" while doing breaths and compressions
6. work with the infant on an elevated area like a countertop or table
7. ratio of compressions to breaths is 5 compressions followed by one breath
8. you use the BRACE method to pick up a baby and move them to support the head, neck, and spine.
9. most of the time, the problem with an infant will be airway related

The definition of BLOCKED AIRWAY is as follows: When the airway is completely blocked by a foreign object that does not allow any sound or air movement to pass through.

infant cpr

The quiz for this class will have to do with the 8 steps for CPR (ADULT and CHILD), along with some questions about INFANT CPR.
Examples might be: You don't tap and shout or shake an infant, what Do you do?
You use 2 hands and 1 hand to do compressions on an adult and a child. What do you do for an infant?
You pinch the nose and put your mouth over the victim's mouth to give the breaths. How do you give
breaths for an infant?
What is the definition of a BLOCKED AIRWAY?
How heavy is an infant's head in relation to the rest of their body?
We use the Heimlich Maneuver to unblock the airway or get a foreign object out for an adult/child, but
we can't do that for an infant. What method do we use?

The answers to these questions are on the 2 documents that are attached to this blog entry. Make sure you download them and read them for the quiz?

The next Day 2 is on Wednesday, Feb. 8th. The QUIZ will be on the 8 STEPS OF CPR (IN ORDER). Also included on the quiz will be additional questions concerning some of the details about each step. For example:

How many sets of compressions and breaths are given to the victim? 2 sets of 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths
What are the 3 signs of circulation?Breathing, Movement, and Sound
How many hands do you use to give compressions -- for an adult (2), for a child (1)
What method do you use to open the victim's airway? (HEAD TILT, CHIN LIFT)
How long do you continue to perform CPR on a victim?
** until medical help arrives
** until someone shows up with an AED
** until the victim begins breathing again
** until you become too tired physically to continue performing CPR

(added on 2/7/12 at 9am): Describe the proper hand placement for chest compressions: Answer: Place the HEEL of your handon the middle of the victim's sternum between the nipples.

We will also be practicing the 8 steps on the mannequins for points, so it would be a good idea to be present for class.

make ups for health

FOR THOSE STUDENTS WHO MISSED THE CLASS ON 1/23/12: All make ups for the quiz need to be done before the next Day 2. If you do not do this, your grade will only be worth 80% of what you actually earn. The past quiz was on the 8 steps of CPR, and the Upper Body Anatomy. We also practiced the compressions and open the airway on the adult and child mannequins. We will have to get together to make up the in-class practice!

The next quiz will be on the 8 steps of CPR (you might want to be prepared to write them out completely!), and some questions concerning EACH of the steps. These answers can be found on the slides/powerpoint about CPR that is attached on an earlier blog. The Blog is dated November 21st, and the attachment is titled: CPR PPT.

Alcohol Ads/Binge Drinking

The following info is from our class presentation last Day 2. Please review the power point on Alcohol Advertising and the attached slides having to do with Binge Drinking. There will be a quiz even though the class is shortened. Remember, Binge Drinking is usually done on the weekends at parties. A lot of young people like to "blow off steam" or "loosen up" with their friends. Most of these people are not alcoholics, but are people who will drink to excess at one period of time, usually lasting 3 or more hours. The danger is acute alcohol poisoning, which could be deadly.

HEALTH-"NATURAL HIGH" VIDEO

This week's quiz will focus on some of the following points from the "Natural High 3 " video shown last class. Please be ready for the quiz on Monday!
Darren Henson-street dancer, dance video choreographer-rough home life, friends killed, in jail, etc. wanted to get away from all of that negative influence and used his dancing talent to channel the positive things he could gain to be successful. Success from embracing the positive influences in life allowed him to become successful, and now he gives back by being involved with young people as a motivational speaker and role model.

Mya--Grammy winning song artist--was a loner as a young person (some of the time by choice) Really tried to stay away from the "drama" of high school (drugs, alcohol, relationships, etc) Used her vocal talent to channel her efforts toward being successful. Her main advice was to talk to parents or an adult that you trust to help vent frustrations if you have them, and to also write your feelings down in a journal to vent your frustrations so you don't keep the bad feelings inside you. Seeing the potential in yourself and others was her "Natural High"

Switchfoot--Award-winning band-Gave some great advice on what the possibilities are if you stay on the straight path. Drugs, alcohol, dangerous behavior were seen as things that would interfere with their development and success. Said that using drugs was a temporary escape from reality but then you come back and everything is still the same. They were not afraid to "Call it" and say "We're out of here, we have something better to do than drugs or drinking". "Living life to the fullest and living it well" was their "Natural High"

P.O.D.--Award-winning rock band-Saw a lot of their friends spend a lot of time and effort on getting high and saw the dark path that they experienced by doing that. The phrase they used to do healthy things in their life was to "catch a natural", meaning going skateboarding or surfing. Now they spend all of their time practicing to make sure they are as good a band as they can be. They also mentioned that you needed to be around some "Bro's"- people who understood you and what you were about and would respect the healthy choices you make to not do drugs.

Jon Sundt-Founder of the Sundt Memorial Foundation-Had 2 brothers that used drugs and both lost their lives to addiction and suicide. The one brother died of a cocaine overdose in a police car and left a 5 year-old daughter. The second brother used drugs that caused severe brain damage and mental illness, was institutionalized, then later committed suicide after being told about the death of his first brother.

QUICK FACT: The most popular drugs of choice for young people currently is Alcohol, Marijuana, and Heroin, because of how cheaply it can be attained. Heroin is especially dangerous because it is highly addictive and could also cause death during just one use. Performance enhancing drugs are also having a big influence on young people due to the desire to "look good and have six-pack abs just like the models and body builders"
