The "Mozart Effect" is a widely discussed phenomenon in the scientific community that has been much hyped in the popular media. Studies have suggested that participants show improved spatial-temporal skills after listening to music by Mozart, thereby increasing one's performance on certain mental tasks, including solving math problems. Scientists as the MIND (Music Intelligence Neural Development) Institute at Irvine, California, have been examining how we hear and process music; they have demonstrated how the brain recognizes symmetries in the language of music and then looks for similar patterns in reasoning out other tasks. Encouraging experiments with young children have suggested that studying music can produce enhanced reasoning skills that last for days. Try this for yourself: listen carefully to a Mozart work before doing your math homework.
